Notice where it catches

If a door rubs against the frame, the hinges or alignment may need attention. If the leaf closes but the handle will not move into its normal position, the locking points or their alignment may be involved. A worn seal can also make a window or door feel difficult to close, while a damaged handle or hinge may be a separate issue.

A photograph of the full door or window, the hinge side, the handle and the place it catches is more useful than a close-up of the handle alone. Include the make or any markings you can see on the hardware.

Avoid forcing the mechanism

Repeatedly pulling a stiff handle or slamming a frame can make a minor adjustment into a bigger repair. If the opening cannot be secured, arrange an assessment promptly and explain that when you make contact. Do not remove locking parts or rely on a temporary fix if the property cannot be closed securely.

What a repair visit may involve

Depending on the fitting, a repair may involve checking hinge position, alignment, seals, handles or the mechanism. Some parts can be adjusted; others need replacing. Age, manufacturer, access and part availability affect the options, so it is best to confirm the fault before promising a replacement price.
